Following the decision in the New York fraud case on Friday, the wife of an investor has started a GoFundMe campaign to assist in covering the growing costs of the former president Trump's legal defense.

Judge Arthur Engoron ordered Trump to pay $355 million in penalties in a civil fraud case, and that is the amount that the GoFundMe is trying to raise. By Saturday night, over 4,000 people had contributed over $185,000 to the GoFundMe.

Trump and his company could have to pay over $450 million with interest, according to the office of the New York Attorney General.

Elena Cardone, the wife of investor and entrepreneur Grant Cardone, launched the internet fundraising campaign.

Elena Cardone posted on the GoFundMe page, saying, "I stand unwaveringly with President Donald Trump in the face of what I regard as unprecedented and unjust treatment by some judicial forces in New York."

"The current legal fights he confronts are an assault not just on him, but also on the basic ideas of fairness and due process that every American deserves," she said.

This Friday's financial punishment follows soon after a court last month found that Trump had defamed author E. Jean Carroll and sentenced him to pay $83.3 million. Carroll had already received a $5 million order from Trump last year.

The former president will appeal the Friday judgment, according to Trump's lawyers, who also denounced the decision as a "politically fuelled witch hunt."
