Based on his remarks to reporters this week on Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), the Republican legislator who first filed the motion to vacate that resulted in McCarthy's removal as House speaker, it seems as if Kevin McCarthy is ramping up his retaliation tour.

McCarthy, who abruptly announced his resignation from Congress, accused Gaetz of lying about "who he sleeps with" and exaggerating how close he is to Donald Trump during an unexpected press conference on Capitol Hill on Tuesday. McCarthy was presumably alluding to Gaetz's charges of engaging in sex trafficking, which included asking a minor for sex.

While the House Ethics Committee is still looking into the matter, the Justice Department decided not to prosecute Gaetz. Joel Greenberg, a Gaetz ally, entered a guilty plea to accusations of fraud and sex trafficking during the first inquiry. Gaetz has been denying any wrongdoing for a long time, and he even made fun of his former House Speaker for making the suggestion.

McCarthy first attacked Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) on Tuesday, stating that she is unable to retain employees and adding, "I just hope she gets the assistance to straighten up her life."

Subsequently, in response to a question about Gaetz and whether or not he had discussed Gaetz's removal from office with Trump, McCarthy refuted the notion that Gaetz and the former president are close.

He said in video that CNN broadcast on Wednesday, "I do not know how close you probably believe the president is to Gaetz, but you should definitely find that out."

Gaetz attended many events, including one at Mar-a-Lago, and has been an outspoken supporter of Trump for a long time. McCarthy threw in a few jabs at Gaetz when a reporter said that it seemed like they are in a tight relationship.

"I am positive. Gaetz most likely exaggerates a lot. He remarked, "It is likely that he also lies about who he sleeps with." McCarthy, who amassed a sizable war chest as one of the GOP's top fundraisers, has promised to fight to remove Gaetz and the other GOP House members who voted to remove him as speaker. Using X, the previous Twitter, Gaetz replied to McCarthy by asking, "What stage of grieving is this?"
