A House subcommittee leader on strategic rivalry with the government said that it "would be stupid" for the US to believe that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) would not attempt to tamper with the 2024 elections.

The leading Democrat on the Select Committee on the CCP, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.), said at a Semafor discussion on February 5 that the Chinese government has created a “very, very sophisticated approach to discourse power.”

According to him, Beijing is attempting to use deepfakes, or the artificial intelligence-driven alteration of face features to produce and enhance false information, as one tool for political meddling in Taiwan and other countries.

The speaker informed the guests, "I believe we would be foolish that either the CCP or CCP linked entities would not seek to exploit some of these technology here in the U.S." He that Beijing use social media advertisements, like those on China-owned TikTok, which according to recent statistics from the Pew Research Center has become the go-to source for news for one-third of Americans under 30.

"It is very easy to modify anything that may be disparaging of one person in our nation or positive of another," the speaker remarked. "We see that it is conceivable... it is within their power to address material that is either critical or supportive of the CCP."

The recent Taiwan presidential election brought concerns about CCP electoral meddling to light. The dictatorship intensified its verbal assault in the weeks before election day, threatening to invade the self-governing island with military force, and launching mysterious balloons and a satellite that Taiwan authorities said was traveling on a "abnormal trajectory."

Washington issued a warning to Beijing not to interfere in Taiwan's democratic process due to the high level of tension, stating that "Beijing will be the provocateur should it decides to react with greater military pressure or coercion."

At their November encounter, President Joe Biden and Chinese communist leader Xi Jinping allegedly made a pledge to each other not to meddle in the 2018 U.S. presidential election. With a laugh, Mr. Krishnamoorthi said, "And we believe that."
