Police believe Kouri Richins, who is accused of selling a book on sorrow and then killing her husband with a fentanyl shot she obtained from a maid, may not have acted alone. A representative for Eric Richins' family, Greg Skordas, tells KSTU that a detective just released an affidavit about a search warrant that details an old event involving Richins' mother, Lisa Darden, with "kind of spooky" similarities to her daughter's case. According to the complaint, Darden was appointed a beneficiary of her love partner's estate not long before the lady "died unexpectedly" from an opioid overdose in April 2006.
The lady "reportedly struggled with abusing her medication," according to NBC News, and had an oxycodone prescription. She "was not in a state of recovery from addiction at the time of her death," the investigator said. My knowledge and experience would probably indicate that this would rule out the chance of an unintentional overdose." The investigator continues by describing how chats discovered on Kouri's phone revealed Darden's "disdain" for her son-in-law. "Based on Lisa Darden's proximity to her partner's suspicious overdose death, and her relationship with Kouri, it is possible she was involved in planning and orchestrating Eric's death," he writes to KSTU.
"Nothing about this seems really surprising because we always felt that Kouri's mother was in some way involved in this," Skordas explains. "This is just more, I think, evidence against Kouri even though it is purportedly looking at her mother." The death of Darden's ex-partner from an opioid addiction is "hardly suspicious... and unfortunately, quite common," argues a lawyer representing Kouri Richins. "That Ms. Darden was the beneficiary of her romantic partner's life insurance policy is also not unique," according to the lawyer. In this instance, Darden is not facing any charges. To the charges of aggravated murder and possessing a controlled drug with the intent to distribute, Kouri Richins has entered a not guilty plea.
