The “Laken Riley Act,” a plan that would force federal agents to detain undocumented immigrants accused of stealing in the US, was approved by the US House of Representatives on Thursday.

The law honoring 22-year-old Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, who was brutally killed last month while out for a run and reportedly by an illegal immigrant, was adopted by the House by a vote of 251–170. 170 Democrats voted against the measure, while all voting Republicans and 37 Democrats supported it.

“170 House Democrats just voted against the Laken Riley Act, refusing to require the deportation and detention of illegal immigrants found guilty of crimes,” said Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) in a post to X. "Sadly, more victims like Laken Riley will occur if these Democrats get their way."

Specifically, the "Laken Riley Act" would "make it mandatory for the Secretary of Homeland Security to detain foreign nationals accused of theft in the United States, and for other purposes."

"It is OFFICIAL: The bipartisan House of Representatives approved the Laken Riley Act. Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA), the measure's sponsor, said, "37 Democrats joined all Republicans in support of this bill and condemning Joe Biden's handling of our southern border!" "I now want the Senate to consider this measure right now. Give ICE additional resources to jail and deport criminal illegal immigrants before they conduct more heinous crimes, and please assist us in ensuring justice for Laken.
