The House on Tuesday passed a resolution criticizing President Biden's immigration policies, with the support of fourteen Democrats. The resolution criticizes Mr. Biden and Alejandro Mayorkas, the secretary of homeland security, for allegedly declining to use presidential power to stop the chaos at the border.
Author Representative Monica De La Cruz, a Republican from Texas, said in a statement, “The resolution underscores the urgent need for the Biden administration to take decisive action to address the crisis at our border”
She said, "We implore the administration to promptly start using the authorities at their disposal in order to regain control of the situation and safeguard the interests of the American people." The nonbinding resolution passed by a vote of 226 to 193.
The Biden administration blames Congress's inability to approve a package of border security measures earlier this year for the two years of unrest at the border after the COVID-19 epidemic.
Republicans argue that the bill gave the Biden administration excessive latitude in enforcing border laws, and they link the issue to Mr. Biden's almost instantaneous withdrawal of a number of border-security initiatives from the previous administration.
Newsmax reports that Texas Representative Henry Cuellar also launched the Democrats for Border Security Task Force, an advisory group, on Tuesday.
"It is important for Democrats to talk about strong border security and still be respectful of immigrants' rights," he told reporters on Tuesday.
Among the fourteen Democrats who voted to criticize the Biden administration was Mr. Cuellar, who made the remark on Tuesday.
It was the second House resolution of that kind this year. Thirteen Democrats—though not all of them as of Tuesday—voted in favor of the House's January 17 vote, which passed 225–187, denouncing "the Biden administration's open-borders policies."
Among the fourteen Democrats who backed the motion on Tuesday were Mr. Cuellar and Representatives Yadira Caraveo of Colorado, Angie Craig of Minnesota, Sharice Davids of Kansas, Don Davis of North Carolina, Jared Golden of Maine, Steven Horsford, and Susie Lee of Nevada.
Democratic lawmakers who opposed the Biden administration's policies included Representatives Greg Landsman of Ohio, Jared Moskowitz of Florida, Frank Mrvan of Indiana, Mary Peltola of Alaska, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, and Eric Sorensen of Illinois.
