Illegal border crossers have increased significantly after Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas formulated measures to reduce "irregular migration" and provide a "legal pathway" for foreign nationals to join the country. A record-breaking almost 1.6 million foreign nationals entered the United States illegally during the fiscal year, including strays.

A record 256,094 people crossed the border illegally in the United States in February. From February 2023, there were 19% more encounters globally and 38% more at ports of entry.

The number of national contacts increased from February 2023 to 213,911, 2022 to 190,578 and 2021 to 115,559. Compared to January 2024's record-breaking 242,521, February's statistics are higher.

The greatest number of illegal border crossers in American history occurred during the first quarter of fiscal 2024 along the northern and southwest borders.

Customs and Border Protection said on Friday that 189,922 people crossed the border illegally in February along the southwest border. It includes CBP One users as well as unauthorized incursions between ports of entry. Interactions along the southwest border increased by 21% in February 2023 and 7% in January 2024.

"A vital part of DHS's efforts to encourage noncitizens to use lawful, safe, humane, and orderly pathways is the CBP One smartphone app, which Congress is currently reviewing," CBP said. "Noncitizens who pass ports of entry or arrive without a CBP OneTM appointment are subject to the Circumvention of Lawful Pathways regulation." If someone does not follow the proper processes, this law presumes they are ineligible for asylum, however DHS encourages undocumented foreign nationals to apply for exceptions.

In order to minimize unlawful entrance between ports, CBP recommends noncitizens in central or northern Mexico "who lack documents sufficient for admission to the United States" to use the app to arrange an appointment and "remain in place until presenting at a preferred port of entry for their appointment."

In February, CBP processed over 42,100 foreign nationals who used the app at ports of entry. According to CBP, "demonstrating that noncitizens will follow an orderly process when one is available," the appointments accounted for 86% of the noncitizens processed at ports of entry.

Almost 501,000 foreign nationals used the app to schedule appointments to visit ports of entry between January 2023 and February 2024. According to CBP, immigrants from Venezuela, Haiti, and Mexico utilize it the most.

As of February, 1,487,195 foreign nationals, excluding gotaways, have entered the country illegally during the current fiscal year.

When foreigners intentionally enter the country illegally between ports of entry and do not leave the country and go back to Mexico or Canada, Border Patrol authorities refer to them as "gotaways." CBP does not make gotaway data public. In order to more accurately project the amount of illegal border crossers entering the United States each month under the current government, The Center Square began publicizing it.

Gotaways avoid apprehension rather than applying for asylum or other immigration advantages. Authorities said to The Center Square that they run from the Border Patrol or other law enforcement operations. Males of military age who are single constitute the majority of those with criminal convictions.

According to Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens, there were over 120,000 known gotaways in the first quarter of fiscal 2024.

Owens said on social media, "What is most concerning is the unknown." "Whom? How come? Why? Authorities from the Border Patrol are unaware of who has illegally penetrated, where they are, or what their criminal intent is.

According to Owens, "It is in the hundreds of thousands and those numbers really keep us up at night." Why would you want to traverse a desert, stay in a stash house, or lock yourself in a tractor trailer if all you have to do is go through the formalities of turning yourself in to the Border Patrol? Perhaps those folks are planning a crime."
