Authorities said that a woman who has been sought by Indiana police since her 5-year-old son's corpse was discovered inside a suitcase in 2022 was located and taken into custody last week in Los Angeles.

State police have charged 38-year-old Dejaune Ludie Anderson with the murder of her son, Cairo Ammar Jordan, whose body was discovered in a hard-shell suitcase in rural Washington County, Indiana, in April 2022.

According to Indiana State Police, Anderson was the subject of an arrest warrant in October 2022 on suspicion of murder, negligence of a dependent that resulted in death, and obstruction of justice. But the mother managed to stay out of jail for almost a year.

Authorities found and arrested Anderson in Arcadia, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, last week after receiving information from a "concerned citizen," according to a press release. Anderson was attempting to board a train on March 14.

According to Los Angeles County jail records, Anderson is being detained without being granted bail. At her Monday court appearance, she declined extradition and will return to Indiana, according to the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office, who defended her at the hearing. It is unknown if Anderson has hired another attorney.

A guy searching for mushrooms in a densely forested region discovered the suitcase holding Cairo's corpse, which had a "distinctive Las Vegas design on its front and back," according to authorities at the time.

Police said that an autopsy revealed the infant had died from electrolyte imbalance, most likely from viral gastroenteritis. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describe the illness as an inflammation of the stomach and intestines that causes vomiting and diarrhea, which may ultimately end in dehydration.
