New York City is allocating an average of $387 per day to support each migrant household residing in taxpayer-funded shelters, despite the ongoing efforts of Eric Adams to reduce spending. The $387 represents the total daily expenses for a migrant household, covering their accommodation and meals, since the crisis started in Spring 2022.
The average expenditure in February was $5 lower compared to the reported expenditure in October 2023, during which there were approximately 65,400 migrants in shelters. The number has been consistently decreasing each month since October and is expected to continue on a downward trend.
With an average of 2.5 people per household, the number of households in the migrant shelters of New York City is estimated to be 26,100. Over $10.12 million is projected to be spent on migrants in the city every day.
