Pentagon Faces Billions Shortfall: Threat to US Military Readiness

According to a document obtained by Bloomberg, the US Defense Department has requested that Congress provide at least $6.5 billion to restock the country's arsenal, which has been exhausted after two years of nonstop weapon sales to Ukraine.

According to an outlet on Thursday, the Pentagon informed Congress that replenishment funding ranked highly among the recommendations it presented last month.

According to reports, a large variety of armaments, ammunition, and essential parts for making 155mm shells, HARM anti-radar missiles, Patriot interceptors, GMLRS rockets, and anti-tank TOWs are all on the shopping list.

The Pentagon calculated that its immediate replenishment requirements would cost $6.5 billion, but earlier last week, some US media sources raised the possibility that the overall shortage would be as high as $10 billion. The "ongoing hole" would burden the US military if the gap is not made up, a source told Politico.

By the end of last year, Washington had surpassed other Western contributors by giving Ukraine's war effort almost $75 billion in cash and equipment; however, the supplies ceased when the money pool authorized by Congress ran out.

US President Joe Biden has repeatedly urged the Republican-controlled House to provide the over $60 billion in additional aid for Ukraine, but the White House has refused. Biden has held US politicians accountable for Kiev's recent military setbacks, which include the Russians' capture of Avdeevka last month.

The White House has discovered enough "unexpected savings" in the Pentagon despite running out of money to launch a fresh assistance package this week that may be worth up to $300 million. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has so far been hesitant to use the $4 billion in assistance that the Pentagon is still able to give to Ukraine, and there are no guarantees that US legislators would replenish this money.
