Two individuals sitting inside the empty apartment of the woman's dead mother attacked and murdered her, according to Manhattan police, who looked for the perpetrators for a week before making an arrest announcement on Friday.
After two days without hearing from her, Nadia Vitels's son found her corpse, stuffing it into a duffel bag. According to WABC, she had traveled from Spain to see the Kips Bay flat, which had been unoccupied for the last three or four months. According to the New York Post, she was last seen exiting an elevator that leads straight into the apartment around 11:30 a.m.
A few of hours later, two people were seen entering the building and using the elevator to go to the same apartment. Authorities claim that a fight broke out. After all, the Post said, Vitels's 19-year-old son went inside the apartment, opened a cupboard, and saw his mother's foot protruding from a bag.
According to WABC, police said the man was shoved against a sheet rock wall, which they discovered to be damaged. She had two fractured ribs, facial fractures, and head injuries. After reportedly stealing Vitels' car, the unidentified suspects allegedly proceeded to Pennsylvania and wrecked outside of Harrisburg. T
They may have been apprehended and the license plate of the car checked by the local police. It was not until the next day that they found out the SUV was connected to a homicide, as reported by WABC. Before they were arrested on Friday in York, Pennsylvania, police found footage showing the couple visiting several auto shops and failing to purchase a vehicle for $1,000, according to ABC News.
How the two got inside the flat on the 19th floor is still a mystery. WABC reports that entry to the building's elevator needs a key.
