After an illegal immigrant reportedly killed a 25-year-old Grand Rapids woman last week, Michigan Republicans want to abolish sanctuary towns.
Deported in 2020, Brandon Ortiz-Vite, 25, reentered the US illegally, obtained a pistol, and shot his girlfriend, 25-year-old Ruby Garcia, many times before taking her vehicle and abandoning Garcia on U.S. 131. House Republican Leader Matt Hall, R-Richland Township, urged President Joe Biden to protect the southern border.
“Joe Biden’s failure to secure the border has allowed multitudes of illegals — including dangerous criminals — to break into our country,” Hall stated. Michigan has suffered fatalities from this illegal immigration epidemic. Democrats have failed to enforce immigration rules and national security, which would have kept Ruby Garcia's killer out of our state and country.
Kent County detained Ortiz-Vite many times before his deportation. Illegal entrance into a dwelling was his conviction, and he had a Grand Rapids bench warrant for 2020 drunk driving and driving without a license.
Hall wrote to Chair Tullio Liberati, D-Allen Park, urging the House Government Operations Committee to consider his sanctuary city and county prohibition. The bill bans counties and municipalities from prohibiting local personnel from collaborating with federal immigration officers. Hall and House Republicans presented the proposals nine months ago.
“Rogue politicians in Michigan communities put public safety at even greater risk when they refuse to work with federal officers trying to apprehend illegals,” Hall added. Sanctuary towns and counties attract perpetrators like Ruby's murderer who may avoid deportation even after a second offense. Disastrous sanctuary policies hinder federal immigration officers and worsen public safety. We must eliminate sanctuary cities to safeguard Michiganders.”
Kent County is a sanctuary county, and Grand Rapids is a friendly city. Hall co-sponsored HB 4879 to outlaw sanctuary policies in cities, villages, and townships, and HB 4880 to ban them for counties.
