Lincoln Woman's Clever Pump Hack Scores Over $27,000 of Free Gas, According to Police

A Nebraska lady stole almost $27,000 worth of petrol, according to investigators, by taking advantage of a bug in the rewards card program. The first to announce Dawn Thompson's, 45, charges of theft by illegal taking in connection with her use of the bug was the local news station KOLN in Lincoln, Nebraska.

After an investigation, Thompson was taken into custody on March 6, the Lincoln Police Department emailed Business Insider to confirm.

According to police, Thompson pumped free gas for more than six months using a flaw, pumping an estimated 7,413 gallons of petrol at no cost. According to KOLN, between November 2022 and June 2023, the average gasoline cost was around $3.758 per gallon, translating to a $27,860 total stolen value.

KOLN claims that a software upgrade to the gasoline pumps at Pump and Pantry in November 2022 was the cause of the malfunction.
