In what seems to be the aged leader's most recent error and one that has once again raised questions about his mental condition, US President Joe Biden told an interviewer that he had advised the Israeli government against striking itself.
In a Wednesday interview with Reshad Hudson of Nexstar Media, the 81-year-old president discussed his strategies for regaining pro-Palestinian supporters, even in light of his continued backing of Israel in its fight with Hamas.
In addition to engaging with activists who support Palestine, Biden said that he had "made it clear to the Israelis: do not move on Haifa," a well-known port city in northern Israel.
The president then seemed to lose his thread of thought before discussing the Iranian strike that occurred over the weekend.
The US President reportedly intended to mention Rafah, a Palestinian city in Southern Gaza that has emerged as the final haven for displaced people in the embattled territory, rather than cautioning Israel against bombing its own city.
According to reports, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have been stationing more artillery and armored vehicles in the vicinity of the Gazan city in recent weeks, perhaps in anticipation of a major ground operation.
In addition, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the IDF would not be able to be stopped by "any force in the world" from pushing into Rafah, which is home to more than a million Palestinians and is allegedly used by Hamas terrorists as a base of operations.
Online users have been making much fun of Biden's most recent misstep, with many referring to it as "seriously embarrassing." While former New York state Assemblyman Dov Hikind said that "there is a strong likelihood Israel refrains from hitting Haifa," former US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman joked that "Israel should accommodate Biden's demand not to attack Haifa."
Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said on Telegram that the US president ought to prohibit himself from running in the 2024 elections.
"If this man were not allocating enormous sums of money and weaponry to conflicts across the globe, it would be hilarious," Zakharova commented.
Up to 86% of American voters think Joe Biden is too elderly to be president of the United States and have voiced worries about his cognitive health, according to a February ABC News/Ipsos survey. A little more than 60% of Americans expressed similar worries about former president Donald Trump, who is Biden's principal opponent. On November 5, the two will compete in the presidential election.
