Elon Musk has been worried about AI for a long time, and his latest assessment is not likely to change the minds of people who feel the same way. In an interview that aired live on his X social media platform on Monday, the CEO of Tesla and co-founder of ChatGPT maker OpenAI said that AI could have more brain power than people as early as 2025.

According to the Financial Times, Musk told Nicolai Tangen, CEO of Norges Bank Investment Management, "My guess is that we will have AI that is smarter than any one human probably around the end of next year."

From there, Musk predicted that within the next five years, AI will be smarter than all of humanity's efforts put together. Plus, he said he thinks that deadline will stick as long as there is enough electricity and hardware to power the needed technology. The Guardian calls this a "sharp tightening" of Musk's earlier predictions, in which he said that "full" AGI (artificial general intelligence) would be achieved by 2029. However, the Times points out that Musk has been off on his dates in the past, especially when it comes to launching self-driving cars and landing a rocket on Mars—he first said that the latter would happen in 2018.

Musk has created his own artificial intelligence company, xAI, which has its own robot named Grok. He explained last year why his worry about AI did not apply to his new business. "If I could press pause on AI or really advanced AI digital superintelligence I would," he told the Guardian at the start of xAI. "Because that does not seem possible, xAI is going to basically make an AI." In a good way, nearly hoped for." He also said: "It is actually important for us to worry about a Terminator future in order to avoid a Terminator future."
