In a stunning ruling that reversed the most well-known case of the #MeToo movement, New York's highest court overturned Harvey Weinstein's 2020 conviction on felony sex crime charges on Thursday.
The trial judge who heard Weinstein's case, according to the New York State Court of Appeals, "erroneously admitted testimony of uncharged, alleged prior sexual acts," enabling material to be presented that would have influenced the jury since the claims were unrelated to the charges against him.
The Manhattan District Attorney, who is now prosecuting former President Donald Trump in connection with hush money, must choose between retrying the case and letting the 71-year-old go free. Weinstein also faces 16 years in jail after being found guilty in California last year for the 2013 rape and sexual assault of an Italian model in a Beverly Hills hotel room.
