Owners of Tesla Cybertrucks have reported instances when their electric pickup truck broke down after a car wash. After driving the $80,000 Cybertruck for only two months, and with fewer than 3,400 miles (5,500 km) on the clock, one owner claimed the truck broke down after rinsing off some sand after going to the beach.
The user @captain.ad on TikTok posted a video of his malfunctioning Cybertruck and said that he tried to reset it but was unable to get it to function.
While making fun of the fact that, although being bulletproof, it does not seem to be watertight, commenters referred to it as a “tin can,” a “lemon,” and a “paperweight”.
Two buttons on the steering wheel caused a five-hour computer reset, which ultimately got the malfunctioning Cybertruck operating again.
"[Tesla] stated that it is a known problem in the Cybertruck that when you perform a screen reset, it takes five hours instead of the usual two minutes," @captain.ad stated. "Perhaps a future software patch addresses it."
The owner's handbook for the Cybertruck from Tesla has many cautions on the hazards associated with cleaning the car.
It contains a warning not to wash it in direct sunlight and tips on how to avoid damaging it when having your vehicle washed.
According to the handbook, "not placing Cybertruck in Car Wash Mode may result in damage (for example, to the charge port or windshield wipers)." "The warranty excludes damage from car washes."
The event occurs in the midst of a significant recall for Tesla's most recent model due to an unrelated accelerator pedal problem.
NHTSA, the US Department of Highway Traffic Safety, has mandated that Tesla recall about 4,000 Cybertrucks produced between November 13, 2023, and April 4, 2024.
"High force applied to the accelerator pedal pad may cause the pad to dislodge, potentially trapping the pedal in the interior trim above the pedal," the NHTSA said in its recall report.
"The accelerator pedal's performance and operation will be affected, potentially increasing the risk of a collision, if the accelerator pedal's pad becomes trapped in the interior trim above the pedal."
In response to declining sales for the most valuable automotive company in the world, Tesla cut the cost of a number of its vehicles and software packages over the weekend.
Reduced sales and heightened competition in the electric car market have caused the company's share price to drop by more than 40% since the year's beginning.
