You probably do not like the idea of people getting through airport security even less than you do not like going through it yourself. But it is true, according to the Washington Post, as the Transportation Security Administration says at least 300 people have gotten past airport security since March 2023.

It was only 72 airport security breaches in 2022 and 29 in 2019. "It is more than we thought," says R. Carter Langston, a spokesman for the TSA. The agency does not think these incidents were full security breaches, though, because the people who did something wrong were finally stopped or checked in some other way.

The Post reports that a woman who got past a person checking travel documents was able to fly from Nashville to Los Angeles without a ticket. Her bags did go through screening, though. When she got there, the FBI held her, and her case is still being worked on.

More than 200 people used exit-only lines to go the wrong way, and 80 people skipped travel document checks. Sources told ABC News that airports and planes are still safe, even though security is not perfect. According to Langston, these cases are very rare and that "vast majority [of offenders] do not seem to have evil intent." According to the TSA, some people move wrongly because they are confused, tired, or forgot something.

Still, the cases are scary when you read stories like this one, which talks about how TSA agents stopped a man from taking a loaded gun through security at a Virginia airport this week. The TSA does not say anything about people skipping the bag check. But any security breach is "a worry," says Tom Mockaitis, an intelligence expert who spoke to the Post.
