Last-minute efforts by Donald Trump on Monday failed to delay and move his hush money hearing in New York to a location other than Manhattan. According to ABC News, Judge Lizbeth Gonzalez did not say why she turned down the request, even though Trump's lawyers had filed it hours before.
The defense said in a hearing on Monday that the case has gotten so much attention that it is hard to find a fair and unbiased jury for the criminal trial that starts next week. As an answer, the lawyer said that since Trump is a well-known figure across the country, there is no reason to think that possible jurors in Manhattan are "uniquely susceptible" to bad news about the case. "The mere fact that they know about this case is not an indication of bias," said Steven Wu.
Regardless, Wu told the judge that Trump has brought about most of the attention by constantly criticizing the case online and in public. According to CNBC, Wu said that he can not get a lot of attention and then use that to get a different setting. To quote the AP, Trump has said that Staten Island would be a great place for the trial. His only New York City borough win in his two runs for president. Trump is also fighting a gag order that keeps him from talking about the case. The appeals court said it would deal with that question later.
