Donald Trump, the former president, has taken offense at a New York judge's decision to prevent him from appearing at a Supreme Court hearing on his presidential immunity from prosecution for actions taken during his White House tenure.
The case will begin with arguments before the Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. on Thursday. We anticipate hearing on presidential immunity before the end of June. Judge Juan Merchan of the New York State Supreme Court, however, turned down the former president's plea for a leave of absence, stating that he was required there for his alleged "hush money" trial.
The former president said that the judge believes he is superior than the nation's top court in an interview with Fox News Digital on April 24.
President Trump stated, "He is preventing me from attending the presidential immunity hearing where some of the greatest legal minds will be arguing the case, the most important case on the Supreme Court in many years, because he thinks he is above the Court."
"The President will be wiped away and reduced to a ceremonial office without presidential immunity. He is forbidding me from attending. He is a Democratic extremist on the left.
Judge Merchan acknowledged that "arguing before the Supreme Court is a big deal, and I can certainly appreciate why your client would want to be there" in response to former President Trump's request last week.
"However, a trial in the Supreme Court of New York is also significant."
Prosecutors from the Department of Justice (DOJ) have charged President Trump with four counts of conspiracy and obstruction in the Supreme Court case. They claim that on January 6, 2021, the President sought to reverse the results of the 2020 election. The former president has rejected any effort to rig the election results and said that he was acting lawfully when he demanded openness and audits of the vote tallies in battleground areas.
He continues to have presidential immunity, which shields him from prosecution for any official activities he made while holding the highest office.
