Fact Check: Voter ID Claims in Texas, Pennsylvania, and Arizona Debunked by Texas's Secretary of State

Online claims say that the number of people registered to vote without a picture ID is rising in Texas, Pennsylvania, and Arizona because of illegal immigrants. But Texas's secretary of state has denied these claims.

An X user wrote on the social media site that the number of people registering to vote without a photo ID is SKYROCKETING IN 3 key swing states: Arizona, Texas, and Pennsylvania. They used Social Security numbers to say that there were 220,731 such registrations in Arizona, 1,250,710 in Texas, and 580,513 in Pennsylvania.

"HAVV lets people register to vote with a four-digit Social Security number." There, illegals can not get licenses. "But they can get Social Security cards (to get work permits)," the post said. The Social Security Administration's Help America Vote Verification (HAVV) method is known as HAVV.

Jane Nelson, the Republican secretary of state for Texas, called the claims made on social media "inaccurate reports" in a recent statement.

"It is not true that 1.2 million people have registered to vote in Texas without a photo ID this year," she said, adding that the number of voters in Texas has only grown by 57,711 since the beginning of 2024.

The webpage for the Texas Secretary of State says that there are currently 17.9 million people registered to vote in the state.

The statement said that Texas residents who want to vote "must provide either a driver license number or a Social Security number." If a person registers to vote with only a Social Security number (SSN), the state checks that the SSN is real.

"The 1.2 million number comes from the website of the Social Security Administration (SSA), which should list how many times states have asked to prove a person's Social Security number. The Texas Secretary of State's office said, "The SSA number is clearly wrong, and we are now working to find out why there is such a big difference."

The office said that in Texas, a voter must show proof of name in order to vote, even though federal law lets people vote without one.

More than 75,000 new people had signed up to vote in Pennsylvania, not more than 580,000, according to Matt Heckel, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of State. He said that on April 8, there were about 8.7 million registered voters in the state.

To register to vote in most states, people use either their driver's license number, their state ID number, or the last four numbers of their Social Security number. States use the first two choices to make sure the person is who they say they are with their motor vehicle offices. Former founder and head of The Center for Election Innovation and Research David Becker told The Associated Press that this is "the vast majority" of voters. The third choice allows the SSA system to confirm a voter's name.

Maricopa County, Arizona, has about 39,653 new voter registrations since the beginning of the year, according to a post on X last week by Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer. This county has about 60% of the state's voters. He denied that 220,731 people had signed up to vote.

The comments about the amount of people registered to vote come at a time when illegal immigration has become one of the most important problems for Americans in the 2024 election.

A study from late February by Monmouth University shows that 23% of Americans think illegal immigration is a "somewhat serious" problem, while 61% think it is a "very serious" problem.

This year, illegal immigration has become one of the most important issues in the presidential race. Patrick Murray, head of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, said in a statement, "Other Monmouth polls found this to be Biden's weakest policy area, even among his fellow Democrats."

Right-wingers and former President Donald Trump have been worried for a long time that the recent rise in illegal immigration could lead to more people voting illegally in elections.

He said earlier this year in Iowa that he thinks Democrats want more and more illegal immigrants to come to the U.S. "because they want to sign these people up to vote."

Pres. Trump said, "They are signing them up even though most of them do not speak English."

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, also wrote on X that Democrats are "importing voters" by letting a lot of people come to the US. Finally, a month ago, he said that "unvetted illegal immigrants" getting into the US are a "national security threat."

"The s are probably laying the foundations for something much worse than 9/11." "It is only a matter of time," Mr. Musk said, implying that some of those people will vote illegally anyway.
