Former High School Art Teacher Faces Charges for Sexual Abuse of 17-Year-Old Student; Alleged 10-15 Encounters

Courtney Rankin, a former Bridgeport High School art teacher, has been charged with sexually abusing a student. The 33-year-old was arraigned on May 23 and charged with felony sexual abuse by a parent, guardian, custodian, or person in a position of trust to a child.

The victim, a 17-year-old, disclosed that Rankin had sexually abused him at his residence in Fairmont "10-15 times" and that the abuse led to a relationship outside of school. Rankin voluntarily provided details of the incidents and confirmed that the relationship started during the school year and that the victim would come to her apartment for sexual intercourse.

Rankin has submitted her resignation, which is on the agenda to be approved at the next meeting. The case has raised concerns about the potential impact of sexual abuse on children and the potential impact on their education.
