Next week, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will bring the franchise back to theaters, and here are the first responses to the new film. The story, which takes place some 300 years after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes, revolves on young ape Noa (Owen Teague), who embarks on a trip that will make him reevaluate all he has ever known.
In the United States, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes had its global premiere yesterday night, May 2. The fortunate few who have already seen it have already shared their first thoughts on the new film on Twitter.
The majority of reviewers agreed that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a compelling continuation of the plot even if it is not the finest movie in the series.
"A beautiful coming of age story framed around the idea of legacy and what happens to it when it is lost to time or subverted by the wicked," Geeks of Doom's Michael Lee said of the new movie. "It does not surpass what Andy Serkis did with his trilogy, but Wes Ball's approach proves that the franchise has plenty of stories to tell," Lee continued. The best part of this film is Kevin Durand's portrayal of Proximus Caesar."
The Direct's Russ Milheim stated, "#KingdomOfThePlanetOfTheApes is a fantastic addition to the series," "The movie never stops being an incredible thrill, even if the tempo may sometimes lag. Both the characters' craftsmanship and visual effects are exquisite. I am eager to see what happens next."
"Between Rise, Dawn, War, and now Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, this series continues to be one of the very best franchise reboots out there," Perri Nemiroff of Collider said. "As anticipated, Wes Ball was the ideal filmmaker to replace him.
"Of course the wizards at Wētā had a big hand in this, but there is also no doubt that Ball's personal proficiency with visual effects contributed big time to how incredible this film looks."
The new picture is "incredibly gorgeous," according to Hollywood Handle, but Dorian Parks of Geeks of Color stated that "this film cements the franchise as one of the strongest IPs out there!"
Caesar may be dead, but Kevin Durand's portrayal of Proximus Caesar, the film's primary antagonist, is a virtual Caesar in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Since Caesar was the most important position in ape society, Proximus adopted the name Caesar, making Caesar virtually a holy figure. Essentially, it was a self-proclamation that apes will not cease to develop, no matter what the cost," Durand said.
Thus, you are seeing the impact and development of Caesar's legacy. Additionally, just as in every scrap of human history, there is always some kind of despot who appears and manipulates others into believing him or her." We will simply have to wait and see how The Witcher's Freya Allan fits into the narrative. The movie also has Allan as a human that Noa encounters along the way.
