The highly anticipated Netflix series' second season will finally premiere this year, according to Squid Game actor Lee Jung-jae.
In 2021, the dystopian thriller from South Korea captivated the globe, but in an interview with Business Insider, Lee said that the season would be available on the streaming service in December.
Plot specifics for the second season are still scant despite high anticipation; however, lead actor Lee Jung-jae had previously hinted that creator Hwang Dong-hyuk was working on a "great story".
"I try not to talk to the director too much, but I am in constant and continuous talks with the production company about season 2," he said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "I know he must be going through such a difficult time since, as you said, the creative process is so tough for him and now with the extra strain of the show is worldwide popularity.
Because I am so familiar with the suffering associated with the creative process from my own writing experience, I do not want to be another contributing element. But like everyone else, I wait with expectation knowing that he will create a fantastic plot for season two.
Since the first season premiered, the franchise has produced Squid Game: The Challenge, a reality spin-off in which 456 people competed in a number of show-inspired tasks, with the winner taking home $4.56 million.
Despite acknowledging that they were waiting for the second season of the main program to finalize their plans, executive producers John Hay and Stephen Lambert have already given the spin-off the go-ahead for a second season.
As Lambert said to Entertainment Weekly, "It is very early days." We also need to discuss the Korean team's plans for their second scripted season with them. To improve it, we should give ourselves permission to intentionally halt and have a moment to process some of the audience reaction before moving on once again.
