Rep. Tlaib Calls for "Uncommitted" Votes in MI Primary to Criticize Biden on Israel-Hamas Conflict

Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) has urged Michigan Democrats to cast "uncommitted" ballots in their state's primary to denounce President Joe Biden's stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict. Tlaib criticized Biden for not characterizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's military action in Gaza as genocide and referred to him as an "enabler." She emphasized that the country sends billions of dollars to maintain an apartheid government and support the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.

Tlaib and her sister Layla Elabed urged Michigan Democrats to cast "uncommitted" ballots in their state's primary to denounce Biden's stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict. They also said they may still vote for Biden in the general election, setting themselves apart from their Abandon Biden counterpart.

Tlaib continued to criticize Biden on Saturday, coinciding with the Israel Defense Forces' advance into Rafah and Hamas' first missile attack on Tel Aviv in months. She argued that funds from the United States allocated to the war would have been better used for Detroit schools, her hometown.

Biden has been critical of Netanyahu's prosecution of the war but has also stood by his uneasy ally, Hamas. After meeting with Kenyan President William Ruto last week, Biden told reporters that they do not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice and do not believe that the actions of Hamas and Israel are comparable.

Obama stated that "what is happening is not genocide, contrary to allegations made against Israel by the International Court of Justice," and that they will always support Israel in the face of threats to its security.
