Australian singer Firerose filed for divorce from her husband Billy Ray Cyrus last month. The lawsuit claims that Firerose was identified as a carrier of the BRCA1 gene mutation in early 2020, indicating a higher risk of breast cancer development. Cyrus strongly recommended a double mastectomy and reconstruction after an MRI in March, with the first procedure scheduled for May 24. However, as the big day approached, Cyrus launched verbal assaults at her, threatening to throw her out of their house and file for divorce.

Firerose claimed that her husband had put her "into an emotional and psychological prison" and made her walk on eggshells around him. He would often call her a "selfish f—ing bitch" and accuse her of being his mistress. She was reasonably afraid to leave or ask for help because she was worried that her husband would interfere with her surgery or her drawn-out recuperation at home, especially with her major surgery date approaching.

Less than 24 hours before her scheduled operation on May 23, Firerose said she was "ambushed" with divorce papers. Cyrus paid for Firerose's health insurance after their October 2023 wedding and indicated that he was willing to repay any unpaid surgical costs. According to the paperwork, "Wife relied on Husband's promises to pay for her surgery, and Husband has now repudiated that promise."

Firerose denied engaging in improper marital behavior and charged Cyrus of behaving in such a way that it made her feel "unsafe" to live with him. After their breakup, Cyrus claimed Firerose had spent about $100,000 of his money on "unauthorized" purchases, so he filed an emergency petition seeking a temporary restraining order to prevent her from using his personal and company credit cards and accounts.

Firerose retorted that she had access to his credit card for the last two years and that there was "no emergency." In the response document that PEOPLE was able to access, the wife's lawyers argued that the parties must maintain their standard of living from the time of their marriage throughout the divorce process.
