Biden Administration Expands Loan Forgiveness Program to Democrat-Favored Workers

The Biden Administration is attempting to expand a "public service" loan forgiveness program to workers politically favored by Democrats. A 2007 law established a program that canceled student debt for government and nonprofit workers who make payments for 10 years. However, the program often pays as much as private businesses and sometimes more.

The Education Department is seeking to reduce the unfair treatment of workers based on their employers' tax status by unfairly favoring workers based on their occupation. Last week, the department proposed making some 450,000 "early childhood educators" employed by private businesses eligible for the public service program.

The Department of Education (DOE) under secretary James Kvaal said that early childhood educators help young children learn, grow, and thrive but are often poorly compensated, and student debt is a problem. If these educators can access Public Service Loan Forgiveness, they can help their youngest children, their families, and their communities.

The DOE is not proposing a rule to expand the program, but instead is soliciting feedback on "different approaches that might be considered when implementing non-rulemaking solutions related to this issue."

Biden officials plan to circumvent the Administrative Procedure Act to expand the program. They worry that the expansion, if done by regulation, would be challenged in court. Congress has established other special loan forgiveness programs, including for teachers in low-income schools and doctors in under-served areas. Instead, Biden plans to expand loan forgiveness by fiat, allowing the debt to be transferred from graduate students and medical doctors to future generations.

Why should taxpayers foot the bill for other people's debts for ten years, regardless of whether they are employed by the government or not? or anyone for two decades? What about my auto debts, house loan, etc.? Even worse, we are all accountable for the loans made to the US government, which squanders our funds on pointless endeavors. Just adding to the moral hazard.
