President Biden will make an announcement on Tuesday on a scheme that would prevent the deportation of 500,000 unauthorized immigrants who are married to US residents and provide many of them a route to citizenship.
Under the executive order, NBC News says, undocumented spouses who satisfy certain requirements, such being married for a minimum of ten years, would be eligible to get work permits. The Wall Street Journal claims that the scheme will rank among the biggest immigration measures in decades. "This is the biggest development since DACA," one immigrant rights activist said.
By summer's end, the application procedure will start. The scheme makes advantage of a parole clause in immigration law, which permits the government to accept the immigrants lawfully and revokes their unlawful admission. Apart from simplifying the process for immigrants to apply for a green card, this measure would make it more difficult to overturn in the event of a Donald Trump presidency. As it stands, the Journal reports that a person who enters the US via the southern border and marries a US citizen must now depart the US for ten years before they can apply for a green card.
