Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo has been criticized for attributing the brutal murder of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray to two individuals who entered the country illegally, while also implicating former President Donald Trump. The Houston Police Department discovered her body abandoned in a nearby area close to her residence. Hidalgo attributed responsibility to Trump and congressional Republicans for the current situation at the border and the tragic murder of Nungaray.

The reporter inquired about the politicization of the issue, as both President Joe Biden and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell acknowledge that Trump is preventing progress. Hidalgo responded that the discussion pertains to Jocelyn and her family, but not immigration.

There has been a significant increase in crimes committed by individuals who are in the country illegally since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021. Jose Antonio Ibarra, a Venezuelan illegal migrant, has been accused of the murder of Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student. Christian Geovanny Inga-Landi, originally from Ecuador and residing in the U.S. without legal documentation, is facing charges for allegedly sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl in New York City.

In mid-June, Victor Antonio Martinez-Hernandez, an undocumented immigrant, was charged with the rape and murder of Rachel Morin, a 37-year-old mother of five children. The number of apprehensions drastically increased from over 400,000 during Trump's last year in office to 1.7 million in Biden's first year, as reported by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP). In the fiscal years of 2022 and 2023, agents apprehended over 2.3 million and 2.4 million migrants, respectively. As of the ongoing 2024 fiscal year, the number of apprehended migrants stands at nearly 1.7 million.
