President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden appeared in court for jury selection in a federal firearms case against him, following the breakdown of a bargain with prosecutors that would have spared the spectacle of a trial so soon to the 2024 election. The president expressed his "boundless love for my son, confidence in him, and respect for his strength," but he would not comment on the criminal prosecution in his capacity as president.

Hunter Biden is accused of three felonies in Delaware related to a handgun purchase he made in 2018, when he was deeply addicted to crack. He has been charged with lying to a federally registered gun dealer, lying on the paperwork used to screen applicants for guns, claiming he did not take drugs, and possessing the pistol unlawfully for 11 days. Republicans criticized the now-defunct arrangement as preferential treatment for the Democratic president's son. He entered a not guilty plea and claimed the Justice Department was unfairly targeting him.

New York City juries found Republican front-runner Donald Trump guilty of thirty-four crimes. In order to protect his 2016 presidential campaign from further harm, a jury found the former president guilty of conspiring to conceal a payment of hush money to a porn star. Although there is no connection between the two criminal cases, their close proximity highlights how the criminal courthouse has gained prominence in the 2024 campaign.

Charges of not paying $1.4 million in taxes will also be the subject of Hunter Biden's separate trial in California in September. After a multi-year inquiry into his business activities, a settlement with prosecutors was supposed to have settled both matters in July of last year. However, Judge Maryellen Noreika, who was Trump's nominee for the bench, questioned a few unusual aspects of the agreement, such as a suggested guilty plea to misdemeanor offenses to resolve the tax crimes and a diversion agreement on the gun charge that stipulated the case would be dismissed if he stayed out of trouble for two years.

The prosecution wants to prove that Hunter Biden lied on the documents because he was suffering from an addiction at the time he purchased the pistol. They want to provide his published book as proof. Additionally, they could present the contents of a laptop he left at a repair shop in Delaware and never got back.

To evaluate if a group of potential jurors can serve impartially on the jury, the judge will ask them a number of questions, such as whether they have given to political campaigns or campaigned for political office. She will also question potential jurors about whether they think Hunter Biden is being charged because his father is the president.
