A new study by the Pentagon has revealed that $62 million in missing U.S. arms assistance to Ukraine has been lost or destroyed. The $62 million worth of weapons was intended for end-use monitoring (EEUM), but communication issues between U.S. and Ukrainian forces prevented reporting and tracking, creating an information gap about what equipment might have been lost, destroyed, or diverted through November 2023. Since Ukraine's conflict with Russia began in 2022, the Pentagon has continuously had trouble keeping track of American assistance to the nation.
The inspector general report states that the Office of Defense Cooperation (ODC) of U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) has not regularly received routine or comprehensive loss reports from Ukrainian troops. The study also claims that U.S. soldiers assigned to monitoring failed to properly analyze loss reports that were already in existence for the possibility of Russian forces capturing weapons.
The OIG continues to investigate allegations of criminal conduct regarding U.S. Security assistance to Ukraine, stressing that it was impossible to determine if U.S. weapons assistance had been transferred. Since the start of Ukraine's conflict with Russia in 2022, the United States has provided the nation with more than $70 billion in weaponry support. As the inventory continues to change, accuracy and completeness will likely become more difficult over time.
