Trump Asks Supreme Court to Intervene in Sentencing Over Falsified Records

Former President Donald Trump has urged the US Supreme Court to intervene in his July 11 sentencing for falsifying company records. Judge Juan Merchan, who oversaw the case, is an acting local judge appointed by Democrats and highly conflicted. Trump stated that their choice will "determine the future of our nation." He has said that he would appeal the verdict, and one of his lawyers stated that they are prepared to take the matter all the way to the US Supreme Court.

Trump became the first former US president to face criminal charges after a Manhattan jury's conviction on 34 counts of falsifying company records last week. In his not guilty plea, Trump refuted several of the case's main allegations. It is unclear if the 77-year-old former president would get a prison sentence. Democratic Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg declined to comment on whether prosecutors would ask for a jail sentence during the future sentencing hearing.

The former president has stated that he should be exempt from punishment for his actions related to the 2020 election, claiming that he was carrying out his official duties as president. The U.S. Supreme Court is currently considering this claim, which will probably be rendered in June, when the Supreme Court's term comes to a close. To for the court to consider Trump's case, the president's lawyers would need to convince at least four of the nine justices. The former president would then need to show that his legal team followed the correct processes in the early phases of his legal proceedings and that the state prosecution had breached his federal constitutional rights in order to win.

Trump and his legal team have frequently attacked the trial and case, alleging that Judge Bragg and Judge Merchan are prejudiced against Trump and that the White House was involved in the investigation. Trump believes that the United States may reach a "breaking point" and that the people would find it difficult to accept him going to jail.

In the wake of his conviction, Trump has increased his fundraising efforts, garnering tens of millions of dollars in the days that followed. Republican National Committee Co-Chair Lara Trump responded to a CNN question on what Trump supporters should do if he were imprisoned, saying that they would remain calm and protest at the ballot box on November 5th.
