During the first few minutes of their discussion on Thursday night, Democratic President Joe Biden and Republican opponent Donald Trump sparred over issues like as immigration, abortion, and their respective approaches to the economy. This gave voters a unique opportunity to observe the two oldest presidential contenders in history side by side.

During the first half-hour of the debate, Biden, who at times sounded hesitant and hoarse, stammered over his remarks multiple times while Trump launched attack after attack, replete with well-worn lies such as the assertions that Democrats condone infanticide and that migrants are to blame for a surge in crimes.

As they looked for a breakthrough in a campaign that polls indicate has been tied for months, Biden, 81, and Trump, 78, were under pressure to demonstrate their knowledge of the topics and refrain from making grammatical errors. Concerns over Biden's age and intelligence in particular have plagued him, while Trump's fiery language and extensive legal problems continue to be a weakness.

Biden had a cold, according to two White House sources.
