After learning from a New York Times article that individuals "very close" to President Joe Biden had been worried about his "cognitive decline" for more than a year, ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos questioned the President on Friday about both his physical and mental capacities.
Following Biden's denial that his dismal performance at last week's CNN presidential debate was anything more than a "bad night" or a sign of cognitive impairment, Stephanopoulos stated: "An other cause for worry is that there seems to be a trend of deterioration that has been the subject of recent reports. Biden's lapses are reportedly becoming more frequent and concerning, according to a July 2 headline in the New York Times. They wrote as follows: "Those who have interacted with President Biden in the last three months or so have reported that the inconsistencies seem to have increased in frequency, severity, and concern after Thursday's debate. Video footage, observations, and interviews have all shown that Mr. Biden has changed significantly since taking office three and a half years ago, according to several sources. The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post both published comparable stories."
"Are you the same man today that you were when you took office three and a half years ago?" the presenter of ABC News then questioned.
"Yes, in terms of successes," Biden said. I was also the one who developed the potentially successful peace plan for the Middle East. It was me who also enlarged NATO. It was me who expanded the economy as well. I went on after completing each particular task that I had either imagined or carried out.
"How much has your physical, mental, and emotional health suffered over the past three and a half years as a result of all that work?" Interviewed Stephanopoulos.
"Well, I just think it cost me a really bad night," asserted Biden. Poor performance. However, as you may know, George, I have optimism for our nation. Trump says we are a nation of losers, but I do not believe that is the case. America is not in very bad situation, in my opinion. America is about to take advantage of so many amazing chances, in my opinion.
Before Stephanopoulos could respond, Biden continued to outline a number of campaign pledges for a second term, including adjustments to the tax code and health care system. I want to know about your particular circumstances. Do you deny that there have been more mistakes, particularly in the last several months?
"Is 110 flat possible for me to run? No. However, I am still in excellent health," Biden said.
Stephanopoulos said, "Are you more frail?" Biden answered, "No."
