In the wake of President Joe Biden's lackluster performance at the first presidential debate, a wave of concern has swept through the Democratic Party. High-profile donors, delegates, and party insiders are openly debating whether Biden remains the best choice to top the ticket in 2024. This brewing discontent, momentarily silenced by a surprising attack on Donald Trump, has resurged forcefully.

Efforts by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to unify support for Biden through a virtual roll call vote have met with stiff opposition, exposing deep fissures within party ranks. A striking instance of this growing skepticism was Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer's blunt suggestion that Biden consider withdrawing from the race, underscoring serious doubts about his viability as a candidate.

This unease isn't just confined to political elites; it's permeating Congress, with an increasing number of Democrats expressing their belief that it's time for Biden to step aside. They cite concerns over his leadership abilities and contentious DNC nomination processes as key factors driving their frustration. At the grassroots level, momentum is building behind movements like Chris Dempsey's "Pass The Torch," which opposes the DNC's push for a virtual nomination on grounds it could dilute party unity. Despite DNC Chair Jaime Harrison defending the necessity of a virtual roll call due to election rules, critics from "Pass The Torch" and elsewhere challenge its legitimacy, pointing to legal experts who question its mandated nature.

This ongoing drama not only highlights internal divisions but also poses significant strategic questions for the Democratic Party as it contemplates its path forward in 2024. With calls for Biden to withdraw intensifying, how these internal debates resolve could be pivotal in shaping the party's future direction.

Moreover, another grassroots group, Delegates Are Democracy, is making waves by opposing the virtual roll call vote without necessarily calling for Biden to bow out. Led by DNC delegate Chris Dempsey from Massachusetts, this group advocates for an in-person convention roll call vote as a means to strengthen the nominee's position against Trump. Dempsey stresses the importance of legitimacy in the process and seeks to educate delegates about their rights and duties should there be a change in candidacy.

Discussions with various Democratic House members have been encouraging so far, though it remains unclear if they will actively support these efforts. According to Dempsey, reminding everyone involved—from delegates to stakeholders—of their crucial role in this democratic process is essential.

As these developments unfold, both the Biden campaign and DNC spokespersons have remained silent on these delegate-driven initiatives. Despite formal expectations that delegates will align with their pledged candidates during nominating votes according to party rules nothing strictly prohibits them from choosing differently—a fact some delegates claim has led to pressure from Biden’s team following his debate performance.

Amidst reports of disenchanted donors redirecting their support away from Biden’s campaign towards maintaining Democratic control of Congress reflects broader discontent within party ranks. As next week’s DNC Rules Committee meeting looms—a meeting that will decide on whether or not a virtual roll call nomination will proceed—the outcome may very well determine how effectively Democrats can rally around their nominee amidst internal strife and navigate towards 2024 with unity and purpose.
