Former President Donald Trump has withdrawn from a planned debate with the Democratic nominee, citing turmoil within the Democratic Party as his rationale. The decision came after Trump had initially expressed willingness to engage in a debate "anytime, anyplace," following Joe Biden's unexpected withdrawal from the presidential race. Trump's reversal throws previously scheduled debates into uncertainty, particularly one that was set for September 10, originally against Biden.

Trump's campaign communications director, Steven Cheung, attributed the former president's change of heart to the instability following Biden's exit from the campaign trail. Cheung criticized what he described as "political chaos" and suggested that internal divisions within the Democratic Party—highlighted by figures such as Barack Obama—over Kamala Harris's candidacy played a role in their decision-making process.

The Democratic National Convention is poised to officially nominate a candidate between August 19 and 22, with Harris having already amassed sufficient delegate support. Despite this, debates scheduled during the presidential campaign are now up in the air due to Trump’s recent statements.

Kamala Harris responded to Trump’s backtrack by emphasizing her readiness to debate and expressing disappointment over his reluctance. She stressed the importance of voters witnessing a direct comparison of their respective visions for America on the debate stage.

Trump has not closed off the possibility of future debates but expressed a preference for hosting them on networks other than ABC, specifically mentioning Fox News as a preferred alternative. His comments underscore ongoing tensions between him and mainstream media outlets while highlighting his continuous effort to control narrative framing ahead of potential electoral contests.
