A U.S. Secret Service agent is on the mend after an incident where he accidentally shot himself with his weapon in what was described by the agency as a "negligent discharge" on Saturday evening in Washington, D.C. The specifics of what precipitated this event were still ambiguous as of Sunday morning.

This episode adds to the existing pressures on the Secret Service, which has been under heightened scrutiny due to recent assassination attempts targeting former President Donald Trump within a short span. According to WUSA9, the mishap occurred while the agent was performing his duties and handling his firearm around 8 p.m. near 32nd and Fessenden streets Northwest.

Fortunately, his injuries were non-life-threatening, and he was promptly transported to a hospital for evaluation and treatment. The USSS confirmed that no other individuals were harmed during this incident.

An internal probe has been initiated by the agency to delve into the circumstances surrounding this event, as reported by CBS News’ DC affiliate. Criticism from both sides of the political aisle has befallen the Secret Service since July 13th when an assailant managed to wound Trump with a bullet during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, barely missing him but grazing his ear. In that attack, Corey Comperatore, a retired firefighter and one of Trump's supporters, lost his life to gunfire authorities attributed to Thomas Matthew Crooks.

Another alarming incident occurred last Sunday when Trump was enjoying golf at West Palm Beach, Florida. His Secret Service detail had to take immediate action against Ryan Routh who allegedly aimed to kill the former president and is the Republican nominee for president in 2024. Positioned outside Trump International Golf Club's perimeter with malicious intent,

Routh was apprehended before any harm could occur to Trump or bystanders. Reportedly left at the scene were two backpacks belonging to Routh along with a camera and an AK-47 rifle outfitted with a scope.
