In a notable deviation from its longstanding tradition, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, representing millions of workers nationwide, has opted out of endorsing a candidate in the upcoming presidential election.

This marks a significant shift for an organization that has historically thrown its weight behind presidential hopefuls, highlighting a nuanced stance in an increasingly polarized political landscape.Despite the national union's neutral position, several prominent Midwestern branches have voiced strong support for Vice President Kamala Harris. Among them is Michigan's Teamsters Joint Council 43, which announced its endorsement with an emphasis on Harris's commitment to economic justice and labor rights. Representing around 245,000 workers, the council praised the Harris-Walz ticket for its vision of an America where worker welfare is paramount.

Similarly, Milwaukee's Teamsters Joint Council 39 has put its support behind Harris. With three local affiliates under its banner and approximately 15,000 members, the council lauded Harris for her role in passing significant legislation aimed at protecting retiree pensions through the Butch Lewis Act. They also endorsed her future plans to promote labor rights through legislative means such as the PRO Act.

This wave of endorsements comes against the backdrop of a national survey conducted by the Teamsters themselves, which indicated a preference among their ranks for former President Donald Trump. According to results shared by Trump's campaign, a substantial majority of surveyed Teamster members expressed their support for him over Harris.

The contrasting views within different levels of the Teamsters organization reflect a broader narrative of divided loyalty among working-class voters. While some local unions are rallying behind Harris's pro-labor platform, others within their rank-and-file seem to lean towards Trump's promises to champion the American worker. This divergence underscores the complex dynamics at play as unions navigate their political affiliations amidst shifting member sentiments and broader societal trends.
