An Oakland County man, Jeremy McCallum, 48, was handed down a harsh sentence on Wednesday, Oct. 9, marking a significant milestone in a disturbing case that has shocked the community. McCallum is set to serve 85 years in federal prison for his crimes against children, followed by an additional 15 years of supervised release.
The case against McCallum began to unfold in 2020 when his son made a harrowing discovery on his father's tablet and decided to report it to the authorities. This act led police to execute a search warrant at McCallum's residence, where they uncovered both physical and digital evidence of the prolonged sexual abuse inflicted upon three young victims.
Authorities detailed how one of the victims, a girl, suffered under McCallum’s predatory actions for nearly ten years. The evidence of this abuse was found scattered across various mediums including VHS tapes, cell phone recordings, and Polaroid photographs. Another heartbreaking revelation was the abuse of an infant girl recorded in the same manner. The third known victim, a young boy, also endured sexual abuse captured on VHS tape.
McCallum faced serious charges at his arrest: 10 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct among others including felony firearm possession, child sexual abuse material production, extortion, and assault with a dangerous weapon. He was denied bond due to the gravity of these accusations.
After protracted legal proceedings which spanned over several years and brought immense distress to the victims' families and community alike, McCallum admitted guilt to all original charges as well as an additional count related to possessing child pornography on June 18.
U.S. Attorney Ison commented on the sentencing stating: “This defendant committed monstrous crimes." He emphasized that McCallum’s conviction and sentencing serve as a stern warning against child exploitation emphasizing that such heinous acts will lead to severe punishment.
Jeremy McCallum’s case stands as a grim reminder of the vulnerabilities children face and the importance of vigilance within our communities to protect them from harm.
