A Greensboro police officer was shot and killed Monday morning while responding to a report of an armed man inside a Food Lion supermarket, authorities confirmed. Officer Michael Horan, who had served with the Greensboro Police Department since 2018, was fatally injured during the incident, Assistant Police Chief MJ Harris announced during a press briefing.
The suspect fled the scene after the shooting, leading to a high-speed chase that ended with his capture, according to the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office. Harris emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public. Details about the suspect, including their identity and motive, have not yet been released as the investigation continues.
Horan, a military veteran with 18 years of service in the U.S. Coast Guard, had been recognized for his bravery, including rescuing a father and son from rip currents. Harris praised Horan as an “excellent officer” with a strong reputation within both the department and the community. “Simply put, we are heartbroken,” Greensboro City Manager Trey Davis said, expressing the city’s grief over the loss.
To ensure a thorough and impartial investigation, the Greensboro Police Department has requested the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to take over the case. Meanwhile, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper confirmed that significant state law enforcement resources have been deployed to assist with the response.
The Food Lion store, where the tragic incident occurred, remains closed as the investigation continues. A spokesperson for the grocery chain expressed condolences to Horan’s family and colleagues, stating, “Food Lion is deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred at our store.” The company also assured that they are providing support to employees affected by the incident.
This shooting marks a heartbreaking loss for the Greensboro community and underscores the dangers law enforcement officers face daily. As more details emerge, the investigation aims to bring clarity to the circumstances surrounding the incident.
