President Donald Trump’s administration has faced sharp criticism following a series of legally questionable decisions during the first week of his second term. The backlash intensified on Tuesday when Medicaid reimbursement portals across all 50 states went offline. This disruption followed new guidance issued by the administration ahead of a controversial spending freeze, raising concerns about its constitutional validity.

In another contentious move, Trump dismissed 17 inspectors general across various federal agencies without providing Congress with the mandatory 30-day notice, a requirement under federal law. Legal experts have since questioned the legality of the firings, with opponents calling them an unprecedented breach of protocol.

The controversy dominated discussions on CNN’s The Lead, where political commentator and attorney Bakari Sellers criticized the Trump administration’s actions. When asked by host Jake Tapper about White House adviser Stephen Miller’s defense of the firings, Sellers did not hold back. He accused the administration of fostering government “chaos” through abrupt policy changes and disregard for legal norms.

Democratic Leadership Under Fire for Response

Sellers also directed significant criticism toward Democratic leaders, particularly Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, for what he described as their slow and ineffective response. He argued that Democrats have failed to provide a timely and compelling counter-narrative to Trump’s actions, leaving many Americans confused and vulnerable.

“Democrats are caught flat-footed,” Sellers remarked. “It’s malpractice that we’re struggling to communicate how these decisions directly impact people’s lives. We don’t need to hear from Chuck Schumer right now. We need to hear from the individuals and communities who are actually suffering because of this.”

He highlighted the real-world consequences of the administration’s policies, such as uncertainty for students relying on federal grants to attend historically Black colleges and universities, including his own daughter. Sellers also pointed out the risks to low-income seniors who depend on programs like Meals on Wheels, emphasizing the human cost of political inaction.

Call to Action for Accountability

Sellers concluded by urging Democratic leaders to adopt a more proactive and relatable approach to engaging with the public. He called for swift action, including the release of targeted messaging campaigns and public testimonies from those directly affected by the administration’s policies. Without such efforts, he warned, Trump and his advisers would continue to dominate the narrative, potentially influencing public perception in their favor.

The Trump administration has not yet responded to these criticisms, while congressional Democrats are reportedly meeting to discuss their strategy moving forward. The coming weeks will likely determine whether they can mount an effective opposition to the president’s agenda.
