The House Homeland Security Committee will disclose new insights into the threats China poses to the United States, according to the committee’s chairman, Rep. Mark E. Green. A hearing scheduled for Wednesday will focus on Chinese “information warfare” and other activities undermining American security and global influence.

Rep. Green emphasized the urgency of addressing these threats, citing Beijing’s strategic efforts to replace the U.S. as the world’s dominant power. “China is leveraging the Chinese Communist Party as its most effective tool for global information warfare,” he told The Washington Times.

The committee plans to outline several alarming activities attributed to China, including the infiltration of American higher education institutions, the establishment of covert Chinese police stations in U.S. cities, large-scale cyber-espionage campaigns, and the manipulation of critical U.S. supply chains. These operations, according to Rep. Green, cast "an authoritarian shadow" over the nation and its allies.

As part of this effort, the committee will hear testimony from China affairs experts and former government officials with firsthand knowledge of Beijing’s intelligence operations. Their insights will provide guidance on countering these growing risks effectively.

Earlier this month, another subcommittee hearing revealed that Chinese companies are using commercial port operations in the Western Hemisphere to project power and monitor sensitive activities. These operations, witnesses suggested, could disrupt U.S. military logistics and trade routes in a future crisis or conflict.

To address these challenges, committee members introduced new legislation. One proposed measure would require the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to establish a dedicated task force focused on identifying and neutralizing Chinese threats. Another bill seeks to cut DHS funding to any universities that host Confucius Institutes, which U.S. officials have flagged as tools for Beijing’s political influence campaigns.

The committee also recently released a report titled The China Threat Snapshot, which documented over 60 Chinese espionage cases across 20 states between early 2021 and August 2024. Rep. Green has taken additional steps by introducing legislation to tighten U.S. export controls to prevent China from acquiring sensitive American technology.

These efforts reflect a broader strategy to counter the multifaceted risks China poses to U.S. national security. The committee's actions align with growing bipartisan calls to protect critical infrastructure and safeguard American interests in the face of China's expanding influence.

The Homeland Security Committee’s work underscores the pressing need for decisive action to address what Rep. Green calls America’s “greatest geopolitical adversary.” The upcoming hearing and legislative efforts aim to provide tangible solutions for mitigating the risks tied to Beijing’s activities.

The committee invites public input on these critical discussions. What steps do you think the U.S. should prioritize to counter China’s influence? Share your thoughts in the comments below or join the ongoing conversation on social media.
