Democrats are intensifying their criticism of President Donald Trump, accusing him of failing to deliver on his promise to lower costs for American families. Pointing to persistently high inflation and rising prices for basic goods, they argue that his policies are worsening economic challenges rather than alleviating them. This growing criticism comes as voters remain increasingly skeptical of the president’s ability to address inflation effectively.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has taken aim at the administration, alleging a “toxic bait and switch” strategy. He argues that President Trump’s focus on cutting taxes for the wealthy has done little to help everyday Americans struggling with rising costs. Speaking on ABC’s “This Week,” Jeffries said, “The core promise that Donald Trump made was that he was going to lower costs for everyday Americans. In fact, we were told that grocery prices would go down on Day 1. Costs are not lower. In fact, they are increasing.”

Meanwhile, economic reports show inflation remains stubbornly high. Prices for groceries, gasoline, and other essentials continue to rise, with eggs spiking due to an avian flu outbreak. Although President Trump has placed blame on his predecessor, President Joe Biden, Democrats argue that the current administration bears responsibility for tackling these issues. “Inflation is his problem now,” Jeffries said, asserting that tariffs and chaotic policymaking are exacerbating the situation.

On CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, defended the administration’s approach. He outlined a plan to address inflation through tax cuts, reducing government spending, expanding energy production, and cutting regulations to boost economic activity. Hassett also noted ongoing efforts to address the avian flu and bring down egg prices. Despite these assurances, public opinion remains divided.

Polls reveal mixed reactions to President Trump’s economic policies. A recent Marquette University survey found strong support for his executive orders on cultural issues, such as recognizing two sexes and deporting unauthorized immigrants. However, when it comes to inflation, voters are less confident. Nearly half believe his policies will increase inflation, and a CBS poll found that 66% of Americans think the administration isn’t doing enough to lower prices. Furthermore, three-fourths of respondents believe tariffs will make goods more expensive.

Democratic Senator Tim Kaine also criticized the administration’s handling of the economy, stating on “Fox News Sunday” that voters are “really worried about mismanagement.” He pointed to rising costs for food, housing, child care, and utilities as evidence of broken promises. Jeffries echoed this sentiment, saying, “This country is too expensive, but they have broken their promises. They have no interest in improving the quality of life for hardworking American taxpayers.”

As Democrats search for a message to challenge President Trump, they are zeroing in on economic issues that resonate with voters. Inflation, in particular, remains a focal point of their criticism. With both parties staking out their positions, the debate over how to manage the economy is likely to intensify in the coming months.
