Steve Bannon Expected To Turn Himself Into State Authorities On Thursday

The Washington Post reported late Tuesday night that former White House adviser Steve Bannon will turn himself in to authorities in New York after being charged. The ex-aide to former President Donald Trump may face state charges that “will probably match features” of a federal fraud prosecution resulting from a fundraising initiative he helped lead, according to the Post, which cited people familiar with the case.

The “We Build the Wall” campaign aimed to generate funds to build a wall along the southern border between the United States and Mexico. The Post reported that “the specifics of the state case could not be confirmed Tuesday evening.” However, sources close to the case who spoke on the record about a sealed indictment said that the prosecution will probably include elements of the federal case in which Bannon was exonerated.

According to federal prosecutors, Bannon and his accomplices channeled more than $1 million to himself and a campaign official rather than constructing a wall. In the final days of his administration, Trump pardoned Bannon, but he did not pardon any of his associates. Only federal offenses that Bannon may have committed are covered by the pardon; state-level offences are not.

Andrew Badolato and Brian Kolfage, two of Bannon’s colleagues, were charged in federal court in the Southern District of New York in April.

Bannon was charged with a crime less than two months after being found guilty of contempt of Congress for refusing to appear before a House select committee looking into the Capitol incident on January 6.
