The Biden administration was temporarily prevented from eliminating Title 42, a Covid-era regulation that permits the Department of Homeland Security to swiftly deport migrants apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border, by Chief Justice John Roberts of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Roberts made his decision in response to a request from 19 Republican attorneys general, including the attorneys general of Arizona and Louisiana, who on Monday “asked the Supreme Court to act after a federal appeals court on Friday declined to put on hold a judge’s ruling last month that invalidated an emergency order known as Title 42. According to Reuters, the policy is scheduled to expire on Wednesday.
Jake Tapper of CNN revealed the news live on air. “Okay, OK. I’d want to include Ed Lavandera from CNN in the discussion. Ed, you’re at the border, and you’ve been talking about this humanitarian situation for weeks. Already, shelters are full to capacity. Do you believe that the Supreme Court’s decision to maintain Title 42, at least temporarily, will have any bearing on the situation there? Tapper enquired.
“Well, despite what is happening with Title 42, there is still a continual flow of individuals coming through this border. Therefore, on this side, a sizable number of people in the El Paso region are still being released. Lavandera responded, adding: “So that doesn’t really lessen the demand on the shelters and the churches that have been sheltering many of these migrants here in the El Paso area.
“Jake, I was actually in the middle of an interview with a man called Ruben Garcia when this news started to spread. And here in the El Paso region, Ruben is maybe the most well-known champion for migrants. He has been employed for many years and is the director of the Annunciation House.

He is the most well-known individual supporting migrants and a supporter of the churches and shelters in the El Paso region. Additionally, while we were sitting down to conduct the interview, we were essentially breaking the news to him about what was happening. He just said, “This is like they have known for a month that this court had ordered this all at the last minute,” in response to his remark.”
“As a result, you can really appreciate the sense of irritation and exasperation that so many Washington-area officials have experienced while trying to decide what to do about everything. But in the days, everything always seems to come down to the final second. And these are shelters that are making every effort to plan in advance. And right now, they’re simply trying to stay afloat, getting up every day and seeing how much room there is for beds and shelter in the city,” Lavandera said.
