Rep. Matt Gaetz not only opposes Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s holding the position of House speaker, but also wants him out of the position altogether.

The Republican from Florida wrote to the Capitol’s designer on Tuesday night to inquire as to why Mr. McCarthy of California, the party’s leader in the last Congress, is using a space intended for the speaker of the house.

What provision of law, House rule, or precedent supports the appointment of someone who finished second in three straight elections for the Speaker of the House? Mr. Gaetz wrote to J. Brett Blanton, an architect. He questioned, “How long will he stay there before he is considered a squatter.

The House adjourned earlier on Tuesday after three votes spread over five hours failed to secure a majority for any speaker contender.

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the leader of the Democratic party, was able to finish first despite not having a majority because to Democratic unanimity in the various votes after 19 or 20 Republicans, led by Mr. Gaetz, refused to support Mr. McCarthy.

Before the House reconvenes on Wednesday at noon, Mr. McCarthy withdrew to one of the speaker’s offices across from the House chamber to plan with fellow Republicans.

Not yet, Mr. Gaetz cautioned.

Mr. Gaetz stated in his letter that “after three unresolving votes, no member may lay claim to this post.”

“Please write back immediately,” he requested of Mr. Blanton, “as it appears Mr. McCarthy cannot longer be deemed Speaker-Designate following today’s voting.”
