Jeff Duncan, the lieutenant governor of Georgia, took aim at Donald Trump’s political clout within the Republican Party, claiming that he should be “in the rearview mirror” because he is a “distraction.”

Kaitlan Collins, a co-host on Wednesday’s CNN This Morning, questioned Duncan on “what message” incumbent Georgia governor Brian Kemp’s (R-GA) re-election on Tuesday sends in light of the fact that Trump wanted Kemp to lose the election. In a 2018 contest, Kemp defeated Stacey Abrams, a Democrat.

Duncan denounced Trump and gave Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) the following praise: “Along with some other states, I believe it conveys to the nation that the Republican party is at a turning point. Donald Trump is undoubtedly in the rearview mirror at this point, and it’s time to move on with the party and candidate quality. It turns out that Mitch McConnell was accurate when he discussed candidate quality. We’ve seen that in Georgia and other states around the nation, where things would be different today if people had simply woken up a year ago and stopped following him in favor of real Republicans and true conservative values.”

Herschel Walker, the Republican contender for the Senate, and incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA), whom Duncan said he also didn’t vote for, appear to be headed for a runoff on December 6.

“I was not going to vote for Raphael Warnock because I did not respect Herschel Walker yet, and he had not earned my support. Therefore, we still have four weeks left. But you know, I believe that many Republicans are awakening this morning to what might have been, like me, he remarked. “What could have been if we had chosen a better candidate who could have won with a margin like Brian Kemp, who would have been able to demonstrate real leadership and real ideas, win the hearts and minds of Georgians, and return the state to being entirely red.”
