The House Oversight and Accountability Committee’s Republican chairman, Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, has sent President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, and his brother, James Biden, the panel’s first formal demands for papers regarding their international business endeavors.

Comer notified Hunter and James Biden as well as their then-business manager that he is looking for documents and communications from the Bidens as part of his committee’s investigation into any potential involvement by the president in their financial conduct, particularly in foreign business deals “with individuals who were connected to the Chinese Communist Party.” Comer charged them with taking “large amounts of money from foreign firms without providing any known legitimate services” in his letter.

Comer stated that in addition to that investigation, the committee is thinking about drafting a measure to tighten federal ethics regulations regarding public officials and their families.

In addition to conversations between the president or James Biden and his wife, Sara Jones Biden, and Hunter Biden over an 11-year period beginning on January 20, 2009, Comer has requested any “marked classified” records that the two may have.

Republicans can now summon witnesses because they control the majority in the House. The Bidens have until February 22 to respond before Comer decides whether to issue a subpoena for records and testimony. In a statement to CBS News, Comer would not rule out the possibility of subpoenas as early as April.

The defense team for Hunter Biden went on the attack last week, demanding state and federal inquiries into the distribution of what was allegedly taken from his laptop and used for personal purposes.

Comer requested the White House to give logs of all visitors to the president’s Wilmington, Delaware, home since he took office in January after finding documents with classified markings there.
