After a showing of his new movie Avatar: The Way of Water and after he declined to sign autographs, director James Cameron gave the middle finger to a group of people who were jeering at him.
As he was leaving a showing of his long-in-development sequel that took place over the weekend in Beverly Hills, Cameron made his way past a mob of fans who were searching for autographs. Some people in the crowd turned around and started booing the filmmaker as he climbed into an SUV after giving everyone the cold shoulder.
Cameron must have heard the boos since he can be seen in CCTV shot of the incident giving the middle finger to the crowd as his vehicle speeds away from the scene of the incident. After he has shown the crowd the middle finger, one onlooker can be heard referring to him as a “scumbag,” and another can be heard yelling, “pay up, asshole!”
The video was initially shared on social media by UnCrazed, and its popularity increased significantly over the course of the weekend.
In the moments leading up to Cameron pointing his index finger in the air, members in the audience had been heckling him about his movie, with one person even saying, “fuck Avatar.” Recent box office results for the picture directed by Cameron are slightly north of $400 million globally. It made approximately $135 million over the course of the weekend, which is little less than the $150 million or more that was anticipated for the weekend’s earnings. The movie, which has an environmentalist theme and is a fantasy, will probably need to earn more than two billion dollars for the filmmaker to consider it lucrative.

Cameron has stated that he warned executives that investing in his sequel would be the “worst business case in the history of motion pictures” due to its enormous cost.
“It is safe to say that you are either the third or fourth highest-grossing film in the history of cinema. That’s the limit you can go to. Cameron stated in regard to the second installment, “that’s your break even.” During its time in theaters, the first installment of the Avatar franchise made more than $749 million in the United States and more than $2.7 billion globally.
