Katie Hobbs, the newly elected governor of Arizona, and Maricopa County are seeking sanctions against Lake, a Republican, after a court dismissed her case seeking to overturn Lake’s loss to Hobbs.

The county and Ms. Hobbs asked Arizona Superior Court Judge Peter Thompson to penalize Ms. Lake for her “unfounded attacks” on election officials in court documents filed on Monday. In a decision issued on Christmas Eve, Judge Thompson stated that no “clear and compelling” proof of election fraud was presented. According to her campaign, Ms. Lake was merely paraphrasing an item from a conservative news outlet.

It’s “enough really is enough,” Maricopa County claimed in its complaint. Attacks on elections and false accusations against election officials ought to stop. The complaint in this case lacks even a thin veneer of legitimacy.

Ms. Hobbs is seeking $550,000 in damages, most of which would be paid to Democratic elections lawyer Marc Elias’s company.

The county is suing for $25,000 because it claims Ms. Lake exploited the courts to “harass political opponents and raise wholly unjustified suspicions about the integrity of the elections.”

Ms. Lake, who claims the 2020 election was rigged and has the support of former President Donald Trump, argues the election was stolen. She lost to Ms. Hobbs last month by a margin of only around 17,000. She still hasn’t conceded.

Kari Lake, according to Maricopa County, “publicly announced that she would accept the results of the governor election only if she was the winning candidate,” before any votes were counted in the 2022 general election.

Legal representation for Ms. Lake did not immediately return a request for comment. She had previously threatened to take her case all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States.

Arizona’s new regulations are as follows. Concerns regarding voting machines were addressed in a tweet from the Lake campaign. But even if you manage to catch them in the act, there’s nothing you can do. It appears that electoral fraud is legal under current law. yet offers no solution to undo it.”

More than half of Arizonans live in Maricopa County, which has been at the focus of election fraud allegations made by Mr. Trump and his allies in the past. It includes all of Maricopa County, which includes Phoenix.

Ms. Hobbs and Maricopa County used a tweet by Ms. Lake, which has since been removed, as evidence that she doubts the judge’s impartiality in their court filings. The article claimed that Judge Thompson’s rulings were “ghostwritten” and that “left-wing attorneys like Marc Elias emailed him what to say.”
